リンバーバーからの英国だより『BUDDYが攻撃的になってしまった理由』

先日、８歳のワイマラナーを飼っている女性から相談を受けました。最近になって急に散歩で出会う他の犬に対して凄く攻撃的になってしまったそうです。私は犬の問題行動を扱う際、いつもホリスティックなアプローチを心がけています。その犬の置かれた環境（飼い主の状態を含む）や状況の変化が犬の感情やムードに影響を与えている可能性を総合的に考えてみる必要があるのです。

飼い主さんの話では、以前はとてもいい子でおとなしく、おっとりしていて子供にも優しい犬だったとのこと。私たちが話している間BUDDYはずっと落ち着きなく部屋の中をウロウロしていて、ストレスを抱えているように見えました。伺った話は以下のようなものでした。最近ロンドンから引っ越して来た。前に住んでいたところではよく公園に散歩に出かけ他の犬達と楽しく交流していた。越して来た家は古い建物であちこちリフォーム中なのでいくつかの業者が工事のため頻繁に出入りしている。ロンドンの家にはバックヤード（庭）があったが、今は家の前に少し庭があるものの往来の激しい道路に面している。通りを歩く人や犬にいつも吠えてしまい、BUDDYは激しく吠え立てる怖い犬だと思われてしまっている・・・

さて、BUDDYはどうして攻撃的な行動をとるようになってしまったのでしょう？BUDDYにとってこの環境の変化は相当なものです。彼が日常落ち着ける場所であるべきテリトリーが、常に他人や他の犬に脅かされる環境になってしまったのですから。BUDDYからすると通りを行き交う人・犬は自分のテリトリーを侵す存在と認識し、吠える事で追い払おうと頑張っている訳です。この行動は、相手を追い払うという意味ではある程度成功していると言えます。しかし、BUDDYは人・犬がただ通りを歩いているだけで、テリトリーを脅かそうとしているのではないことは理解できません。ここで思い出して下さい。犬はご褒美があるとその行動をもっとやろうとします。ここでは吠え立てることで人・犬が遠ざかることがまさに「ご褒美」となってしまっているのです。

この状況を改善する為に、以下の対策を試みました。まず家の中で工事の業者が見えない落ち着ける静かな場所をBUDDYのために確保しました。また、通行人に吠えさせないため通りに面した庭に出られないようフェンスをつけました。散歩の時は、他の犬に出会ったら飼い主に注意を向けさせるよう練習してもらいました。

現在、状態は大きく改善されBUDDYも飼い主さんもハッピーになっています。




I held a behaviour consultation with a lady who owned an eight year old Weimaraner who had suddenly became aggressive towards other dogs whilst out walking. When dealing with a behaviour problem I will always take a holistic approach and try and discover what is going on in the dog’s environment that will affect their emotions and establish the mood state of the dog.

The owner reassured me that the dog was normally easy going, relaxed, calm and lovely to have around the children. While we were talking Buddy was constantly pacing around the room and looked quite distressed. The owner told me that they had recently moved from London and he used to walk in the park where he was happy to meet and greet other dogs. The house they had moved to was an old one which needed a lot of work to make it habitable and there were several contractors coming to the house to do the work. Where the house in London had an enclosed garden at the back this one didn’t, and the dog could go to the front of the house which led to the busy street. He would watch the passers by and constantly bark at the dogs and people walking past. Buddy must have looked very frightening as he lunged and barked at them.

So what would make Buddy suddenly turn aggressive? Suddenly for Buddy there was quite significant changes in his environment. His normal serene territory was constantly being threatened by people and dogs. Buddy in fact thought the people and dogs walking past were threatening his territory and he found that barking would make them go away. Of course this behaviour was very successful but Buddy did not realise that the people and dogs were just passing by and had no intentions of approaching him or going on his territory. Remember the higher value the reward is the more it will increase the dog’s behaviour. For Buddy the people and dogs walking away when he barked was the greatest reward for him.

To change things for Buddy we found an area in the house where he would be calm and peaceful far from the visiting contractors. The owners put a fence to the sides of the house which prevented Buddy being able to go to the front of the house preventing him barking at passers by. Whilst on walks the owner has kept him on his lead and teaching him to pay attention to her when another dog approaches. The good news is Buddy has really improved he is so much happier and so is the owner!.
